GENERAL DESCRIPTION:This Grounds position plays an important role in creating a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for building occupants and visitors at state-owned facilities. Working under limited supervision, you’ll help maintain the exterior appearance and functionality of buildings, ensuring grounds are well-kept and inviting year-round.
In this hands-on role, you’ll perform a variety of outdoor maintenance duties, including mowing and trimming grass, as well as caring for trees, shrubs, and flowers. During the winter months, you’ll support snow removal efforts on sidewalks and parking lots using a range of equipment. You’ll also assist with moving furniture and setting up for events and functions, as well as providing recycling services across state-owned and leased buildings.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The listed functions are illustrative only and are not intended to describe every function that may be performed at the job level.- Provide turf and landscape maintenance consisting of mowing, trimming, raking, aeration, and all other grounds maintenance needs using various hand and power tools and farm/lawn tractors and equipment. Plant and maintain trees, shrubs, and flower gardens, including soil amending and preparation, pruning, and removal.
- Perform maintenance and cleaning of parking lots, sidewalks, and entries using various hand tools, power tools, and equipment.
- Maintenance, repair, and installation of outdoor furnishings, including fencing, benches, ashtrays, signage, trash receptacles, flag poles, etc.
- Designated essential personnel on-call for snow removal crew, performed snow removal on all State-owned parking lots, sidewalks, building entries, stairs, ramps, and fire escapes using various snow removal equipment\, hand tools, and ice-melting products. Identify safety hazards and restrict access accordingly.
- Maintains the State paper recycling program by loading, hauling, and dumping recyclables, including paper, cardboard, plastics, and aluminum, throughout all State-owned and leased buildings. Baling cardboard with a compactor for pick up.
- All safety and PPE standards (bloodborne pathogens, chemical mixing, bending, and lifting) must be adhered to. Training includes keeping up with current industry standards.
- As needed, assist with special conference room set-ups. Work with customers to set up facilities to accommodate activities and meetings as requested. Performs function and event setups, including sound systems, audiovisual equipment, podium, tables, chairs, and other items as needed.
- Perform office and various furniture moves for all State agencies in the Capitol complex and other buildings as required.
- Open and prepare State buildings for the workday, including unlocking buildings, turning on lights, hanging flags, and setting up functions as needed. Prepare grounds for the workday, including sweeping entries/ sidewalks, dumping trash cans and ashtrays, removing snow and ice as needed, and general grounds cleanup of trash and debris. Checks buildings and grounds for problems or maintenance needs and reports to the proper authority.
- Performs preventive maintenance on building facilities and grounds and assists other trades assistants and contractors on projects as needed. Assists with the inventory of building and grounds supplies. Assists with irrigation, weed, and pest duties as assigned. Assists with the training of new hire employees.
- Responsible for weed and pest control, mowing, trimming, aerating, trimming and planting trees, repairing sprinkler and irrigation systems, removing snow and ice, and other general building and grounds repair work.
- Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE:- Knowledge of state and facility policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of power and manual tools.
- Knowledge of sprinkler systems and irrigation equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:High School DiplomaExperience:0-2 years of progressive work experience (typically in Building and Grounds) with acquired knowledge at the level of a CustodianOREducation & Experience Substitution:1-3 years of progressive work experience (typically in Building and Grounds) with acquired knowledge at the level of a CustodianCertificates, Licenses, Registrations:None- Necessary Special Requirements
PHYSICAL WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Exposure to hazardous materials, chemicals, bio-hazards, potential explosives, and the elements.
- Must be able to drive vehicles and operate large, complex cleaning and grounds maintenance equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs.
